Awards to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit organizations, community groups, government agencies, businesses, and individuals for initiatives or projects that have made a significant and lasting impact on communities. Funding is intended to recognize sustainable urban transformations. The Prize seeks to inspire urban change-makers across the globe by elevating trailblazing initiatives and telling impactful stories of sustainable urban transformation.

Sustainable urban transformations are deep social, economic, and environmental shifts in the way cities look, feel, and function. They impact multiple dimensions, including physical structures, institutions, mindsets, behaviors, daily practices, and financial flows. They take a variety of forms, pathways, and involve a diversity of actors and communities.

Finalists will be chosen for projects that most fully embody the following:

  • The big idea, or the extent to which the project uses an innovative approach to solve an important urban problem;
  • The life-changing impact, or the extent to which the project has changed people’s lives, seen through change to the physical environment, institutional structures and routines, financial/money flows, behaviors and daily life, and perceptions and mental models; and
  • The ripple effects, or the extent to which the project has had impact beyond its boundaries, seen through change in local or national institutions, in other neighborhoods or areas of the city, or in other cities or geographies.

Finalists have a chance to:

  • Be celebrated on a global stage
  • Win a cash prize
  • Travel to New York City for awards ceremony
  • Gain exposure to international media and a world-class jury
  • Join a global network of urban experts and change-makers
