Request a Grant Writer

Grants to Maine nonprofit organizations for programs and activities that enhance and promote a positive relationship between people and their natural environment. The Foundation has supported projects such as environmental education, water testing, and land easements and acquisitions.

The Foundation evaluates proposals according to the following criteria: 

  • Does the grant request meet the mission of the John Sage Foundation?
  • Will the project benefit the relationship between many people and the environment, or reach a group which is underrepresented?
  • Will John Sage Foundation’s participation make a substantial difference to this project?

Number of Grants:

While the Foundation generally likes to fund a variety of projects, they will consider giving the majority of our funds to a single entity in any grant cycle.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Projects have ranged from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications must include the organization's most recent 501(c)(3) ruling.

Pre-Application Information:

All application materials should be emailed. The materials must arrive no later than April 30, 2020 for consideration at the annual meeting in May.

If applying for land acquisition support, please include the property appraisal, any proposed easements, and supporting maps of the property if not included in the appraisal. If applying for conservation easement support, please include the terms of the easement and a copy of the appraisal.
