Grants averaging $30,000 to USA Native American-controlled nonprofit organizations or community-based groups to create and support programs serving Native American food producers. Funding is intended for projects to increase positive farm outputs, including capacity and revenue, that will grow farmer capacity and Native farms and ranch operations. Farming is inclusive of traditional forms of agriculture such as gathering and fishing.

This project will give priority to organizations that can assist and contribute to capacity-building, training activities that will grow the human capital and organizational capacity and increase the long-term sustainability and self-sufficiency of Native farmers and ranchers and increase the growth/sustainability of the economy and agricultural sector in Native communities. 

Examples of allowable activities under this funding opportunity include, but are not limited to:

  • Native farmer and rancher trainings
  • Capacity and skill building services offered to producers
  • Cooperative management programs
  • Projects that focus on multiple producers
  • Intergenerational or youth focused farming and ranching programs
  • Engaging farmers and ranchers in plans for local food system control
  • Program focused on increasing business operations or access to capital
  • Projects connecting farms to market opportunities, technical assistance and more.

Total requests for project budgets within this funding opportunity should not exceed $30,000.

Term of Contract:

The grant period for this funding opportunity will commence March 1, 2020 and end February 28, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations eligible to apply include U.S.-based, Native American-controlled, nonprofit 501(c)(3), tribal organizations, Native ยง7871 organizations, or Native American community-based groups that further Native American farming and ranching activities, in a manner designed to assist individual Native American farmers and ranchers. Organizations that are represent farmers and ranchers, but have not been formally organized as a non-profit are encouraged to apply with a fiscal sponsor.

First Nations does not currently provide funding for individuals, public schools or organizations serving American Indians that are not Native-controlled or tribally-operated. Furthermore, urban groups that serve only off-reservation tribal members are unlikely to be funded outside of specifically-targeted opportunities.

Examples of unallowable activities under this funding opportunity include:
- Capital construction projects (which includes the construction, purchase, renovation, and/or furnishing of facilities)
- Scholarships or tuition assistance
- Films, television and/or radio programs
- Endowments
- Development campaigns
- Funding for individuals
- Purchase of Real Estate
- Support of lobbying activities or drafting legislation
- Support of litigation

Application Deadline: Monday, December 16, 2019, 5 p.m. MT

First Nations notifies the project contact listed on the application via email approximately 4-6 weeks after the application deadline.

All applicants must complete the First Nations online grant application. Partial applications, incomplete applications due to user error, or faxed/emailed/mailed applications will not be considered unless they have received prior approval.

First Nations L.E.A.D. Conference Attendance: All applicants should include at least $2,000 in their proposed application budgets for travel to send at least one individual to attend the biannual L.E.A.D. Conference. More information will be forthcoming regarding the location, time, and dates of the conference. However, the travel funds should be included in the proposed program budgets.
