Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $60,000 to USA and Puerto Rico faculty and staff members at eligible IHEs for humanities-based activities. Funding is intended to support a wide range of research projects, publications, and scholarly activities related to the study of the humanities. Eligible projects are conducted at Hispanic-serving colleges and universities, and include pursuing research in primary and secondary materials and producing articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, or other scholarly resources. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Common to all projects must be humanities research.

Eligible projects include:

  • Humanities research in primary and secondary materials leading to the development of books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, e-books, digital materials, translations with annotations or a critical apparatus, critical editions, or other scholarly resources;
  • Humanities research related to institutional or community goals or interests, such as projects that draw on institutional or community archival collections; and
  • Humanities research leading to the improvement of an existing undergraduate course, including the development of humanities resources (for example, oral histories, identification of previously unavailable primary sources, historical or literary collections).

NEH is especially interested in supporting projects that advance humanities-related work in the following areas:

  • “A More Perfect Union”: NEH Special Initiative Advancing Civic Education and Commemorating the Nation’s 250th Anniversary
  • Protecting Our Cultural Heritage

For additional information about these areas of interest, see: https://www.neh.gov/sites/default/files/inline-files/Awards-For-Faculty-HSI-NOFO.pdf#page=5

Estimated Size of Grant:

The amount of the award is $5,000 per full-time month. Thus an award to support eight months of half-time work would be $20,000 equivalent to four months of full-time work at $5,000 per month). The maximum stipend is $60,000 for the equivalent of twelve full-time months.

Term of Contract:

The project period is 2 - 12 months of full-time work. Applicants may work between half time and full time on a project, or in combination, starting as early as January 1, 2021.

The period of performance may begin as soon as January 1, 2021 and as late as September 1, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Individuals who are full-time, part-time, adjunct, and retired faculty members and staff members affiliated with Hispanic-Serving Institutions, as defined and determined by the U.S. Department of Education at the time of application, are eligible to apply.

Potential applicants to the Awards for Faculty at Hispanic-Serving Institutions program should check with staff at their institution to determine institutional status at the time of application. Individuals may also verify that their affiliated college or university is a Hispanic-Serving Institution at the time of application by visiting the U.S. Department of Education website: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/idues/eligibility.html

All US citizens who teach at, serve on the staff of, or have retired from Tribal Colleges and Universities are eligible to apply.

Foreign nationals who take up permanent residence outside the United States any time between the application deadline and the end of the period of performance will forfeit their eligibility to hold an award. (Leaving the U.S. on a temporary basis is permitted.)

While applicants need not have advanced degrees, individuals currently enrolled in a degree-granting program are ineligible to apply. Applicants who have satisfied all the requirements for a degree and are awaiting its conferral are eligible for NEH Awards for Faculty. Such applicants must include a letter from the dean of the conferring school or their department chair attesting to the applicant’s status as of April 8, 2020.

Applicants may not apply for funding for a project previously supported by an NEH Fellowship, an NEH-Mellon Fellowship for Digital Publication, a Public Scholars award, or an Award for Faculty. Applicants may, however, apply for funding for a project previously supported by a two-month NEH Summer Stipend.
